Independent Cargo Inspection Across United States Ports

Adams & Braithwaite LLC is the United States inspection subsidiary of Captain Logistics. The company is responsible for the independent verification of cargo quantity and quality at every American port and terminal where the group operates — covering crude oil, refined products, petrochemicals, vegetable oils and dry bulk.

Operating from Hackensack, New Jersey, the team attends vessels, barges, shore tanks, rail cars and tank trucks along the East Coast, the Gulf Coast and the inland waterway system. Every attendance produces a documented, traceable record that our principals, traders, terminal operators and insurers can rely on when title, custody or payment depends on the numbers.

Role Within The Group

Port inspection & cargo survey — North America

What The Company Does

Adams & Braithwaite acts as the independent third party between buyer, seller, carrier and terminal. Our surveyors are appointed to establish what was actually loaded or discharged — not what the paperwork says — and to record the condition of the cargo at each custody transfer.

  • Quantity determination — shore tank gauging, vessel ullage and on-board quantity measurement, barge and rail car calibration checks, and calculation of gross and net standard volume.
  • Quality control — representative sampling at all stages, sample sealing and retention, and coordination of independent laboratory analysis against the contractual specification.
  • Loss control — investigation of quantity differences between load and discharge, void space and free water checks, line and pump-over verification.
  • Custody transfer supervision — witnessing the full transfer operation from first foot sample to final gauge, with time logs and documented exceptions.
  • Documentation — certificates of quantity and quality, time sheets, letters of protest, and inspection reports issued after every attendance.

The company services the group's cargo movements across the following United States regions, with surveyors dispatched to terminal, anchorage or berth as required.

How An Inspection Is Handled

  • Nomination — the appointment is received with the vessel, parcel, terminal and contractual specification; a surveyor is assigned and the terminal is notified.
  • Pre-transfer — shore tanks are gauged, lines verified, vessel tanks inspected for suitability and previous cargo, and first foot samples drawn where the contract requires them.
  • During transfer — the operation is witnessed throughout, with running samples, temperature readings and hourly rates recorded.
  • Post-transfer — closing gauges taken, quantities calculated, samples sealed and dispatched to the nominated laboratory.
  • Reporting — preliminary figures are issued the same day; the full certificate package follows on completion of analysis.

Standards & Safety

Field work follows recognised industry measurement practice for petroleum cargoes, including the API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards and equivalent ASTM methods. Surveyors work to the same health, safety and environmental rules that apply across the group.

  • Site-specific risk assessment before every attendance
  • Full PPE, gas detection and confined-space discipline on deck and at terminal
  • Calibrated measurement equipment with maintained records
  • Independence from the commercial parties to every transaction

Our wider commitments are set out in the group Health & Safety Policy and Social Policy.
